Review of “The Case of the Missing Marquess: An Enola Holmes Mystery”

The Case of the Missing Marquess by Nancy Springer

If you haven’t watched Enola Holmes on Netflix, go do that now. This review should be titled The Case in which the Movie Was Better. I don’t want to continue to put down the book, because it is good. I enjoyed reading it, but it felt lacking. There was little motivation driving the action. I know this is a middle grade book, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be well-written. The Netflix movie added plot where in the book there was little. Honestly, I think that the screenwriter did a heck of a job with such a small source material. There is another thing that leaves a bad taste in my mouth with the book. It uses a well-known slur for Romani people. Though this book gives off Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy vibes, it’s the first of the series and was published in 2006. I do recommend this book, if only to make comparison to the movie more fun, and I do plan on reading the others. Maybe they get better with time.
